Holy Yarn! This might be the most colorful and vibrant post in my blog to date. VOGUEknitting Live! celebrated its fifth annual convention at New York’s Marriott Marquis in Times Square, and I was truly remiss at not knowing as much as there is to know about the knitting world. Knit designers, knit enthusiasts, knit educators, beginner knitters, self-labeled knitaholics, any kind of knitter you can think of was HERE this weekend and the creativity swirling about was infectious.
Sporting a massive marketplace spanning two floors with over 100 vendor booths, the convention displayed such amazing works of art as the knitted and crocheted ‘Seven Wonders of the Yarn World,’ a 10-foot tall hand-knitted teepee by German artist Ute Lemmark, and anything you can possibly knit from toys and garments, to head masks and a kitchenette full of knitted foods! Of course, it’s the patterns that are for sale, not the products, as me, the non-knitter, was bummed to learn when I asked if I could buy the hand-knitted humpty dumpty for my forthcoming daughter’s nursery.
Runway shows abounded all day on Saturday, and during the Gala Dinner where an inspiring presentation was given by Julie Rubiner, a passionate knitter and the Facilitating Manager of Sweater Design at EILEEN FISHER. The Gala Dinner concluded with a fashion show featuring select Eileen Fisher knits, and upcoming knits from Vogue Knitting’s Spring issue.StevenBe.
